Satire Example
Chapters 1-5
2. This time period is very distinct because a lot of people owned slaves and spoke in a way that is unmistakable. The way people spoke was with a heavy southern accent and had different words than what the words are called now.
3. The perspective is from a 12 year old boy that was experiencing life in the 1830’s, which is a completely different view than, for example, an adult or someone who was a slave. What we are told through the story could be very different than what actually happened because it could get twisted.

Chapters 6-11
1. Pap has Huck locked up because Judge Thatcher and the widow were trying to get the widow to be Huck’s guardian instead of Pap. Pap didn't want Huck to be taken because he didn't want him to become civilized.
3. An abolitionist was someone who was for abolishing a practice, but during this time period, it was someone who was for abolishing slavery. Huck is most likely concerned about being called one because during this time period, slavery was a big thing that a lot of people practiced and being an abolitionist would have made Huck an outcast.
4. The things that gave Huck away were; he changed what his name was, he didn’t thread the needle correctly, and he clapped his legs together instead of spreading them when trying to catch the lump. In our times, 3 things that would give a boy away would be his voice, his body shape, and muscle mass. Three things that would give a girl away would be her body structure, nail polish, and if her voice is softer.

Chapters 12-16
- King Solomon was going to split his child in half and give one half to the two people claiming to be the mother. Jim interprets the story by saying that Solomon was stupid for cutting a child in half as half a child isn’t any good.
- After Jim wakes up to Huck being back, he was very grateful he saw him again and didn’t want to be seperated because Huck was his only friend. I think Jim is a good person with a good heart and he just wants the best for him and Huck.
- Jim is very superstitious and this may be because in this time of history, stories were told and superstitions were really popular. Since they were spread around so much, people would believe them, which is the case with Jim.
- It tells us that Huck is beginning to change his way of thinking and the way he treats other people. I think because he was with only Jim, he began to see that black people weren’t just slaves, and that they were actual people too.
- Huck is struggling to give Jim up because Jim is his friend and he knows he is breaking the law, but he also wants Jim to become free as Jim is his friend. When the men came up to him asking about escaped slaves, Huck could have easily told them about Jim on the raft, but he decided not to and that showed how much his character has grown in the book already.
Chapters 17-21
1. The Grangerford family is very rich, they have a big house, every person has their own servant, including Huck even though he isn’t blood, and they own lots of land with many slaves. Before they let Huck in, they were wary because they wanted to make sure he wasn’t affiliated with the Shepherdsons, but after, they treated him like one of their own. When they did this, it showed their compassion and kindness, but it also showed their fear because of the feud between them and the Shepherdsons.
2. He could have written it in because he wanted to show how farmers (Grangerfords) and ranchers (Shepherdsons) feuded during this time period. These jobs were probably the most common for this time because they could provide a good life. They were the most reliable and many people were either a farmer or a rancher.
3. When Huck said “I don’t want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I’ll cut it pretty short.”, it gave off a feeling that it wasn’t going to be good or that something bad had happened. When he went into talking about the battle, you understood why he didn’t want to talk much about it because his friend, Buck, was killed in the battle.
4.The King and Duke are two con men, not actual royalty, who decided to team up to trick people to give them money. When they met Huck and Jim, they both fall for it, but Huck soon figures them out. Huck probably goes along with their story because since they are both adults and white men, they could turn them in and that would ruin Huck and Jim’s plans to be free.
5. With the Duke’s solution, I think that someone might see them twice and the Duke might slip up on details from their story the first time, which would get them caught.

Chapters 22-26
1. The last line said,” Ladies and children not admitted” and that would work people into the play because they would want to see why women and children weren’t allowed to go see the play. Men would also want to go because they could have a night away from their family.
2. A. Huck doesn’t see the point in telling Jim that the King and Duke aren’t real because they seem real so it’s easier that way.
B. He means that since they were con artists, they had gotten used to faking being real and it tricked everyone.
3. Huck was talking about the King and Duke fake crying over Peter and faking to be his brothers. He felt like it was ridiculous that the King and Duke were going to these measure to con people like that.
4. The doctor knows they are frauds because of their accents and how they speak. He warns Mary Jane and the townspeople but they don’t listen as the King has been so generous to them.
5. The King and the Duke decided to not leave in the middle of the night because the King wanted to get more money than the money they already had.

Chapters 27-30
1. People stayed up with the dead during this time because they wanted to keep insects and rodents away from the body so people would stay up and watch the body to keep insects and rodents away.
2. We learn that Huck is having a change of heart about lying with the King and the Duke because he feels bad about everything happening to the three girls. When he told Mary Jane about what was going on, it showed that his morals had changed since when he agreed to help the King and the Duke
3. One of the methods the townspeople used to find the frauds was handwriting. They made all of the suspects write a sentence and sign their name and then compared it to letters that were written by the real brothers. The next method was they asked what tattoo was on Peter’s chest. Only the real brothers would have known as the frauds would have arrived after Peter was in the coffin.

Chapters 31-35
1. Huck was trying to pray about becoming a better boy. It wasn’t working because he knew that his heart wasn’t in the right place. He thought that because he snuck Jim away that he was a terrible person for everything and he wanted to pray away all of his “sins”.
2. Huck tore up the letter because he thought he wasn’t meant to be a good boy and he decided that his friendship with Jim was more important than leaving him and losing a good friend.
3. I think that Tom Sawyer just wanted to help a friend out, which is why he decided to help Huck free Tim. I think Huck it just taking it the wrong way and thinking of him bad, but he did the same thing. Huck also might have just been surprised because Tom always did the right thing and Huck knew that this would go against Tom’s morals.
4. In the first statement, “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”, I think Huck meant that since the King and the Duke were captured and tied to a rail, he felt bad for them since they were caught. The second statement, “But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t go no sense, and just goes for him anyway.”, Huck was talking about how his conscience was nagging at him because he felt a little guilty about the King and the Duke being captured and him not being there.
5. Tom and Huck were looking for a more difficult way to break Jim out because they didn’t want a simple plan that wouldn’t be noticed in a dramatic way. With a simple, low key plan, they wouldn’t leave an impression on anyone or anything.

Chapters 36-40
1. Tom’s motivation is to make a huge plan that he will be remembered for because he doesn’t want to make a boring plan that no one will remember. He wants his family and people in the town to think of him whenever they think of a runaway slave. Huck’s motivation is to help free Jim from slavery. He feels bad that he and Jim became so close and then he was caught. Huck realized how Jim was a true friend to him and wanted to get him free from slavery to repay him.
2. They say they let on because the family started to notice that their things were going missing. Aunt Sally noticed the missing shirt and spoon and then their slaves noticed the missing sheet and candlestick. The nail they stuck in Uncle Silas’ hat, but it fell out and they need to figure out another way to get the nail to Jim, as well as another spoon since the missing one was found.
3. Tom is writing the letters and warnings because he needed a distraction on the night that it would happen. He also wanted it to make his plan more extensive and thought out. His motivations are to get the family worried so that they will be on extra lookout the night of the escape, making the plan more exciting.
4. The planning by Huck and Tom is satire because it makes fun of how some plans to help someone escape from something can be so ridiculous and far out there that they are a ton of work.
5. Huck says “I knowed he was white inside” because Jim got really concerned about Tom’s leg that was shot and Jim wanted to help him. The stereotypes around slaves at that time were that they weren’t thought to be friends with white people, but because Jim was caring so much about Tom even though they didn’t know each other that much, he was breaking Huck’s stereotypes about slaves.

Chapters 41-End
1. Huck felt bad that she was treating him so good when he and Tom were lying to her about who they were. He probably felt like he didn’t deserve it because he had helped Jim escape, and was pretending he was Tom.
2. Jim, in this situation, wanted to help Tom, as Tom had helped him escape. He was willing to risk his freedom to help save Tom. We learn that Jim has a big heart and wants to put other people before him.
3. Tom exposed his and Huck’s plan about freeing Jim to Aunt Sally while he was recovering. I don’t think it was to be malicious, but he had slept for a long time after the doctor helped his leg. He also told Aunt Sally how he wasn’t Sid, and Huck wasn’t Tom.
4. I think that Huck is a good kid who had a rough story. His character had a huge development and his morals changed dramatically. I really liked how Mark Twain kept Huck interesting instead of keeping him the same throughout the whole book. Having Huck narrate was interesting because you saw everything that happened from his point of view.
